No disagreement here that this is why we lose, but do you really think environmental organization can raise this kind of money to influence elected officials?
Spending parity is not required when you have public opinion and the truth on your side–but you do have to play the game.
This has not worked so well in Loudoun County VA, where significant electoral contributions invested by community interests have only resulted in an elected body that swings from one extreme to the other with every election. And even with the current “good” elected body, Loudoun’s plan to adopt Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay standards is going down in flames.
Perhaps I am foolish and naive, but from my view, simply pouring more money into the electoral system is likely to simply add more zeros to the contribution amounts.
Polluters clearly understand that buying elected officials is not enough by itself. They also fund studies to dispute the EPA pollution caps, fund outreach programs to promote dis-information, invest in efforts to discredit pesky organizations and/or individuals, wine and dine community leaders to gain their support, and expand their influence by partnering with other polluters.
I donate to political campaigns but I give more to the local environmental nonprofit. It is very clear to me that, without their consistent efforts to protect local resources, even the best of our elected officials would succumb to the significant pressures from local polluters.
Supporting local non-profits is a start, but if your local nonprofit is a 501c3 education group, as so many of them are (see Why We Lose Part 1), they are prohibited from fully engaging the political process–it is the price they pay for their tax exemption. Dr. Ernst’s point is that environmental education is not a viable political strategy, and the Bay restoration needs a meaningful political strategy to compete in the policy process.
